PM Khan Forceful Sacrifice
The Prime Minister was finally compelled to’sacrifice’ after years of protecting his ‘bishop’ Usman Buzdar; Elahi may find it tough to “save Imran,” but the arrival of the ‘Q’ in Punjab may be beneficial to his cause.
Even while a no-confidence resolution was being debated in the National Assembly, Prime Minister Imran Khan used his ‘trump card’ to win over PML-Q Punjab President Chaudhry Parvez Elahi to his side by offering him the much sought-after job of chief minister of the province.
PM Khan Struggling Decision
In a single gesture, Prime Minister Khan has not only managed to keep his party’s rule in Punjab safe from his arch-rivals, the PML-N and the PPP, but he has also mobilised the PML-Q to work with other allied parties and disgruntled members of parliament to save Imran Khan’s seat in the National Assembly.
Only a day before, the governing Pakistani Tehrik e Insaf (PTI) seemed to be losing the political struggle. After a lengthy address at the Parade Ground on Sunday, Prime Minister Khan said that a worldwide plot against his administration had been hatched and that certain forces inside Pakistan had been recruited and trained to work against him with foreign money.
No-Confidence Vote Against Imran
As the clock crept down to the vote on the no-confidence motion against the prime minister, the unexpected sacrifice of Usman Buzdar as chief minister was seen as the right option at the time of the voting. It is still largely regarded that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif (PM Khan) has been exposed too late to reposition himself and retain his job as a result of this ‘trump card.’
The PTI’s top leader believes that any effort to persuade Buzdar to step down will come too late because Khan’s new confidant, Parvez Elahi, will have little time to campaign and persuade the PTI’s disgruntled elements as well as the allied parties, which have publicly broken away from the ruling coalition, to rejoin it.
If Khan had taken this brilliant step two weeks earlier, Parvez Elahi would have had the courage and talent to persuade and bring back more than the requisite number of unhappy MNAs into the governing coalition fold,” he said, adding that Elahi had the ability to bring back more than the requisite number of MNAs back into the governing coalition fold.
PM Imran Visit To Pervaiz Elahi
Mr Elahi, even when the PTI and the PML-Q had not made any commitments, had told a government delegation visiting his residence, which included Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak, to placate their allied parties, the BAP and the MQM, rather than fooling them and offering only ‘lollipops.’ To gain the support of the PML-Q, Elahi proposed that the delegation make a public statement of his candidacy for the job of Punjab chief minister in return for its assistance.
Elahi has just seven days left in the National Assembly to cast his last vote, thus Prime Minister Khan is banking on his nominee to help him defeat the opposition on the eve of a vote of no confidence, which is expected on April 4. Upon arriving to Parliament Lodges, Mr Elahi met with the leaders of the MQM-P and immediately went to work on the matter.
In the opinion of a political analyst, Mr Elahi may have difficulty rescuing Imran Khan during these uncertain times, but he will be able to make major gains in Punjab, enjoy the balance of his tenure, and earn a large share of the next general election pie.
It was clear that certain members of the Chaudhry family were not pleased with the choice of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) to join the PTI, and their disputes continued until the wee hours of the morning. The members of Mr Elahi’s family are looking forward to his election to the Punjab Assembly with bated breath. Along with contacting Jehangir Tareen in the United Kingdom, reports claim that Elahi phoned him and begged for his support in his election as the Chief Minister of the country. The sources claim that if the Tareen group, which contains around 18 members of Parliament, decides to back the opposition, Elahi would have a tough time.
Nomination of Next Chief Minister
Since the nomination of Mr Elahi as the next chief minister, it has become difficult for the unified opposition — consisting of the PML-N and the PPP — to pass a no-confidence motion against Usman Buzdar, who is now serving as the province’s chief minister. According to the opposition, which claimed to have a majority of more than the 186 votes necessary to unseat the chief minister, the PTI government in Punjab was on the brink of being overthrown.
The PML-Elahi N’s already has strong relationships with a large number of MPs from the PTI and Tareen groups, which would help him to maintain his position in Punjab. Similar to his election as assembly speaker, he seems to be unfazed by his election as chief minister since he thinks he can get the support of more members of parliament than is required.
Senior Punjabi politicians believe that “the Chaudhrys of Gujrat have a special position and authority that allows them to gather a large number of politicians behind them at the drop of a hat.“
In the Punjab Assembly, the PTI has 183 members, whilst the PML-Q has just ten members. The PML-N, the main opposition party, gets 161 votes, while the PPP has seven. Following Jugnu Mohsin’s decision to join the PML-N, there is now one vote for the Rah-i-Haq Party and four votes for independents.
Members of PTI Reported
According to members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the prime minister’s offer of the chief minister’s seat to the PML-Q has additional implications. It is possible that Elahi’s party would be able to completely demolish the PTI in Punjab over the next two and a half years, according to the rumour mill. A number of MPs who joined the PTI before to the 2018 general elections, including Law Minister Basharat Raja and Chaudhry Zaheeruddin, who were formerly members of the PML-Q, might decide to return to their original party if the results of the polls are not favourable to the PTI.
Advice To Sharif Family
Asif Ali Zardari, the co-chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party, pressured PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif to hand up the Punjab chief ministership to Parvez Elahi in order to ensure his election as prime minister, but a schism within the Sharif family stopped him from taking the risky step.
Several days after Shehbaz visited the Chaudhry family in Lahore, Pakistan, PML-Q leader Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain claimed to have talked with PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif; however, he never got a response.
